Neck Lift Surgery Sydney

Dr John Flood performs Neck Lift Surgery in Sydney. Individual components that will be considered include skin redundancy, platysmal (neck muscle) separation and laxity, excessive neck fat (either on top of deep to the platysma muscle) and atrophy of the chin bone. The superficial soft-tissue elements must be considered against the backdrop of the underlying bone musculoskeletal architecture, ie, neck length, the position of the hyoid bone in relation to the neck muscles and the projection of the chin.

Surgical Approach

The Long Thin Neck

In the long, thin neck, the characteristic is caused by prominent bands of the platysma muscle and redundant skin. The surgical technique to address this area involves a general anaesthetic as an overnight stay procedure. A short incision is placed beneath the chin to allow exposure of the underlying platysma muscle. The skin on the front of the neck is elevated by this incision. A further incision is placed behind the ear and just in front of the hair line of the neck to allow elevation of the skin on the outer part of the neck. Once the dissection has been completed the underlying muscle is addressed, this involves suture tightening of the muscle as well as partial division of the muscle to allow the muscle to re-drape appropriately. The skin is then elevated and the redundant skin removed behind the ear. A drain is placed beneath the skin and brought out behind the ear. The drain is removed the following day prior to the patient going home. Dr Flood usually likes the patient to wear a neck garment for a period of two weeks post-operatively. Thereafter soft-tissue massage is commenced. Most patients only require oral analgesia overnight following the procedure.

The "Short Fat" Neck

This is the result of excessive fat in the cervical and sub-chin areas. A detailed assessment must be made of the skin quality as well as the platysma muscle. If the skin quality is good and the muscle tone good then liposuction may be a suitable technique to address the fullness in the neck. At times where there is still skin redundancy and poor muscle tone then a neck lift (platysmaplasty) procedure may be suitable as described above. In association with the neck lift extension de-fatting of the neck is required to help re-define the chin/neck angle and the jaw line. The fatty tissue is only removed on top of the muscle thereby avoiding injury to the underlying facial nerve.

Understanding Neck Lift Surgery (Platysmaplasty)

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, medically known as platysmaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to address structural and aesthetic issues in the neck region. This surgery primarily targets the platysma muscle, which can become lax over time, leading to vertical banding and sagging. By tightening this muscle, the procedure helps restore neck contour.

The neck lift procedure involves precise incision techniques, typically around the ears and under the chin, to access and modify the underlying structures while minimising visible scarring. The interconnectedness of facial and neck aesthetics often necessitates a comprehensive approach, combining a neck lift with other facial surgeries for balanced results.

  • Hydration: Stay well-hydrated in the days leading up to your surgery to aid in recovery.

What to Expect During Surgery

On the day of your neck lift surgery, you will be administered anesthesia to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. The type of anesthesia used will depend on the complexity of the surgery and your preferences. We will make precise incisions, typically around the ears and possibly under the chin, to access the underlying neck structures.

During the procedure, we will:

  • Tighten Muscles: Reposition and tighten the platysma muscles to create a firmer foundation.
  • Remove Excess Fat: Eliminate unwanted fat deposits through liposuction or direct excision.
  • Trim and Redrape Skin: Remove excess skin and redrape the remaining skin.

The duration of the surgery varies based on the extent of the work needed. Once the procedure is complete, we will carefully close the incisions with sutures, and bandages may be applied to support the healing process.

Post-Surgery Recovery
Comprehensive Post-Operative Care

Post-operative care is crucial for ensuring a smooth recovery and achieving the best possible results from your neck lift surgery. Our team provides detailed instructions and support to help you handle the recovery process effectively. This includes:

  • Managing Swelling and Discomfort: Swelling and discomfort are common in the initial stages of recovery. Dr Flood will prescribe medications to manage pain and provide tips for reducing swelling, such as keeping your head elevated and using cold compresses.
  • Monitoring Healing: Regular follow-up appointments are essential to monitor your healing progress. Dr Flood will check your incisions, ensure there are no signs of infection, and assess the overall recovery.
  • Physical Activity Guidelines: It is important to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for several weeks after surgery. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation and prevent blood clots.
  • Skin Care: Proper skin care is vital during recovery. Dr Flood will provide recommendations for gentle cleansing and moisturising to keep your skin healthy and support healing.
  • Scar Management: While incisions are made in discreet locations, managing scars is an important aspect of recovery. Dr Flood may suggest treatments or products to minimise scarring and improve the appearance of the incision sites.
Long-Term Results and Maintenance

The results of neck lift surgery are long-lasting, but maintaining them requires ongoing care and a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the benefits of your surgery for years to come:

  • Sun Protection: Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial. Use a high-SPF sunscreen daily and wear protective clothing and hats when outdoors.
  • Healthy Diet and Hydration: Maintain a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Staying hydrated supports skin health and overall wellness.
  • Regular Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to maintain a healthy weight and improve circulation. Avoid exercises that strain the neck area until fully healed.
  • Skincare Routine: Follow a consistent skincare routine that matches your skin type. Include products that promote collagen production and hydration.
  • Avoid Smoking and Excessive Alcohol: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can negatively impact your results. Avoiding these habits helps maintain your neck lift’s outcome.

By adhering to these guidelines and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can prolong the effects of your neck lift surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions about Neck Lift Surgery

How Long is the Recovery Time?

The recovery time for a neck lift varies among individuals. Initially, swelling and bruising typically subside within two weeks. Most patients can resume normal activities within two to three weeks, but it may take several months for the final results to be fully apparent. Dr Flood will provide specific postoperative care instructions to promote optimal healing and ensure a smooth recovery process.

Are There Any Risks?

As with any surgical procedure, neck lift surgery carries some potential risks:

  • Infection: Post-surgical infections can occur, potentially causing redness, swelling, and fever. Prompt medical treatment is necessary to manage infections effectively.
  • Bleeding: There is a risk of bleeding during or after surgery, which may lead to the formation of hematomas (collections of blood under the skin) that might require additional procedures to address.
  • Scarring: Scars are an inevitable part of surgical procedures. While efforts are made to place incisions in less noticeable areas, the extent of scarring can vary among individuals.
  • Anesthesia Complications: Reactions to anesthesia can range from mild symptoms like nausea to more severe complications. A thorough medical history evaluation helps mitigate these risks.
  • Nerve Injury: Temporary or permanent nerve damage may affect sensation or movement in the neck and face. Most nerve injuries tend to resolve over time, but some may persist.
  • Hair Loss Around Incision Sites: Hair loss can occur if hair follicles are damaged during surgery. This may be temporary or, in some instances, permanent.

Dr Flood will thoroughly discuss all potential risks during your consultation and provide detailed pre-and postoperative care instructions. Following these guidelines closely is crucial to minimising complications and promoting a smooth recovery.

Is Neck Lift Surgery Right for Me?

Neck lift surgery is suitable for individuals experiencing sagging skin, muscle banding, and excess fat in the neck area. Ideal candidates are those in good overall health with realistic expectations about the outcomes. Dr Flood will assess your suitability for the procedure during your consultation, considering factors such as your medical history, neck structure, and aesthetic goals.
